Job Description

The Translator is responsible for accurately converting written materials from one language to another, ensuring that the original meaning, format, and tone are maintained. This role is critical in managing the current volume of translation tasks to decrease the organization’s reliance on external translation services.

Essential Role and Responsibilities

  • Convert concepts, style, and tone in the source language to equivalent concepts, style, and tone of the target language.
  • Translate documents from English to Spanish and Spanish to English, including communications material such as releases, statements, blogs, and other material; letters sent by the Oversight Board, its Executive Director, General Counsil, and other staff; legal documents; government documents including acts, laws, and regulation; and other documents.
  • Compile information and technical terms into glossaries and terminology databases to facilitate translation process.
  • Maintain or duplicate the written structure and style of the source text while also keeping the ideas and facts accurate.
  • Properly transmit cultural references and other expressions that do not translate literally.
  • Adapt a range of products, including letters, websites, communication materials, and other documentation.
  • Use effectively computer-assisted translation tools to translate new text, review, and post-edit.
  • Run revisions with key stakeholders.
  • Handle a significant volume of translations and efficiently process documents to meet FOMB’s needs.
  • Support the monitoring of website materials to ensure they are translated and published.

Key Relationships

Internal Relationships

  • Works closely with the communications department to translate press releases, reports, and other public-facing documents.
  • Collaborates with various departments to ensure that all necessary documents are translated accurately and in a timely manner.

External Relationships

  • Serves as a linguistic bridge to the public and stakeholders, ensuring that they can access and understand the FOMB’s communications in their preferred language.

Supervisory responsibilities

  • This role does not involve supervisory responsibilities

Requirements for the position

  • A minimum, of 5 to 8 years of experience as a professional translator.
  • Experience with legal documents.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish, with excellent writing and comprehension skills in both languages.
  • Ability to translate a variety of documents, maintaining the integrity and style of the original content.
  • All qualifications will be considered in terms of their relevance to the role.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Linguistics, or a related field.

Skills and Competencies

  • Exceptional ability to translate complex texts accurately and convey the same tone, style, and nuances of the original language.
  • Deep understanding of the cultural contexts of both the source and target languages.
  • Meticulous attention to grammatical details, vocabulary, and syntax to ensure high-quality translations.
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills to manage a high volume of work and prioritize tasks to meet tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with translation management software and tools to enhance productivity and accuracy.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
