Legal Associate

Job Description

Under the direction of the Deputy General Counsel, the Legal Associate will perform complex legal work and advise on a variety of legal issues relevant to the Board’s mandate.

Essential Role and Responsibilities

  • Develop an extensive understanding of PROMESA.
  • Review contracts, letters, court filings, policies and other official documents.
  • Draft legal memoranda and prepare presentations for executive staff.
  • Provide legal and strategic advice to Board workstreams.
  • Identify legal risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Support the Board’s governance matters.
  • Assist in managing Board meetings and activities.
  • Establish effective working relationships with Board staff, advisors, and officials in all branches of government.
  • Other tasks as requested by the Deputy General Counsel and/or the General Counsel.  

Key Relationships

Internal Relationships

Daily contact with Board staff & engages daily with Directors and staff to support the objectives of PROMESA.

External Relationships

Frequent contact with government officials, advisors, and stakeholders.

Supervisory responsibilities

The position does not involve supervisory responsibility.

Requirements for the position

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school with an up-to-date and current license to practice law in Puerto Rico and/or the US.
  • A minimum of 2 to 5 years of in-house or law firm experience.
  • Experience in contract drafting and negotiation, preferably government contracts.
  • Government experience is a plus.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English
