Media Relations Lead

Job Description

The Media Relations Lead positions play a vital role helping the Press Secretary in shaping and managing the public image and media relations of the FOMB Executive Director, Directors and Boar Members.

It gives direct supports to the Press Secretary’s efforts to communicate policies, decisions, and responses to the media, private and public sector to ensure messaging is consistent with the organization’s priorities and public stance. Assist in the coordination of communicating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging and alignment with organization goals.

This position entails crafting strategic media plans, fostering relationships with key stakeholders, and ensuring effective messaging to promote transparency and public engagement.

Essential Role and Responsibilities

  • Proven ability to support the creation and execution of comprehensive media relations strategies that align with organizational goals.
  • Provides support to the Press Secretary in establishing and maintaining relationships with the media to promote positive coverage of the organization.
  • Assist in preparing talking points, press statements, and briefings for the Press Secretary.
  • Help develop and execute comprehensive communications plans / strategies that align with the organization’s goals. This includes planning for both proactive and reactive media outreach, managing daily news cycles, and ensuring coherent narratives are promoted.
  • Liaison with Journalists and Media Outlets: in the absence of the Press Secretary the Media Relations Lead will be primary contact for journalists seeking information or clarification from the Press Secretary’s office.
  • Help coordinate interviews, background briefings, and press conferences with media outlets, ensuring the Press Secretary is briefed on key media figures and potential lines of questioning.
  • Managing Media Logistics for Public Appearances: Assist in oversee media logistics for press conferences, public addresses, or events involving the official. This includes coordinating media access, setting up press areas, and ensuring all media guidelines are followed.
  • Help distributes media advisories and other communications to announce news, events, or initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging and alignment with organization goals.
  • Coordinate with other communications government agencies offices to ensure unified messaging and collaboration. This is especially important for large-scale initiatives or policies that involve multiple areas of government.

Key Relationships

Internal Relationships

Daily contact with the Press Secretary Team. Collaboration with the Communications team.

External Relationships

Journalist and Stakeholders as needed. 

Supervisory responsibilities

This position does not involve supervisory responsibilities

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations or government public affairs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (Spanish and English languages).
  • A minimum of 2 – 4 years of experience managing communications, media relations, public relations, and government or public affairs.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

Additional-Desired Experience

  • Previous experience in:
    • Working with the local or federal government
    • Presenting to high-level management
    • Understanding of government processes, policies, and public communication strategies.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. This includes the ability to write clear, concise, and compelling press releases, and other communications
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with team members, consultants and media personnel.
  • Ability to develop and execute media strategies that are in line with organizational objectives.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in English and Spanish.
  • Proficiency in crafting presentations and briefing materials for executive leadership.
  • High level of professionalism and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Requires a keen understanding of the political landscape and the ability to navigate politically sensitive issues effectively.
  • Ability to work under intense scrutiny and tight deadlines, often requiring quick decision-making and rapid response to breaking news.
  • Coordination with National Media: The media relations lead often works with national-level journalists and news outlets, focusing on broad-reaching impacts and messaging that will be interpreted on a larger stage, sometimes even internationally.
  • Media Monitoring knowledge: Be able to monitor news articles, broadcasts, and online content related to the organization, competitors, and industry trends when necessary (not primary role).
